Finally, after many attempts a scout mission to Odessa Ukraine took place.
Under the logistical support of Dan Lukach the mission took place on May 22-29, 2010.  Dan holds dear his homeland of Odessa and has long worked to
help the people of the region.  Now in retirement he is committed to establishing
medical programs to assist the needy including Hospice, which is a new concept for
the area.
Adult Cardiac Surgeon Zev Davis, MD and Janine Henson, RN represented CardioStart in assessing the needs of the Cardiac Surgery program at Odessa General Hospital.
They were pleased to find a well-equipped unit and receptive staff.  CardioStart has determined that the needs lie in education and training, something they are ready to provide.
Additionally, a tour of an outlying clinic/hospital was completed and a needs assessment of the port clinic defined equipment needs.  Already, with the assistance
Of Tampa Children’s Hospital and Mr. Lukach two containers have been sent through the newly designated humanitarian port.
Watch for future invitations for missions to Odessa, Ukraine.

Ghana
Kumasi, Ghana (February 2008 - present)
The Republic of Ghana, in West Africa, is widely viewed as one of Africa's most stable democracies, as the first sub-Saharan African nation to achieve independence from its colonial heritage in 1957. The city of Kumasi lays west of the capital of Accra. This historic city was once the capital of the Ashanti Empire and continues to serve as the cultural center of the Ashanti people. Although the city was destroyed almost a century ago, Kumasi contains the modern palace of the Asantehene.
There is a single cardiac surgery center in Accra, which only performs about 100 cases each year. The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), in Kumasi, serves a more deprived population. It depends on foreign nonprofits to perform cardiac surgeries.  CardioStart is helping to develop an independent, comprehensive program by sending large equipment and supplies, and help set the necessary benchmarks for the Hospital to become a regional tertiary referral center.  As part of this mission, we will be assisting development with more complex procedures, help evolve the rhythm of regular operating, monitor progress and continue physician and nurse cardiology, surgical, and medical education.  During missions, CardioStart provides the entire program with comprehensive nursing, biomedical, perfusion, ICU equipment preparation and teaching.
Ghana possesses one of the best game reserves in West Africa, a multitude of good beaches and is widely known for its people's hospitality.  Lodging for CardioStart missions is graciously provided for by our hosts. Breakfast and lunch are provided by the hospital.  Safari, coastal trips and other adventures are worth considering, before or after the mission.

Vietnam
PEDIATRIC HEART SURGERY MISSION
HANOI, VIETNAM
Presently, only 10% of children in Vietnam are receiving life-saving surgery for congenital heart disease. Therefore, CardioStart cases in Vietnam involve very young pediatric cases, and some young adults with severe vascular disease arising (mostly) from rheumatic fever.
In conjunction with Humanitarian Services for Vietnamese Children (HSCV), CardioStart assists with  pediatric and adult congenital/acquired heart surgery in Hanoi, Vietnam. The hospital is advancing pediatric and near adult congenital heart surgery and cardiology, and CardioStart helps the local team with diagnostics and more complex techniques than they are currently handling.
CardioStart missions take place at the new 200-bed E-Hospital Cardiovascular Center.  This university-based hospital has just opened a new center for pediatric and adult cardiac care and has been allocated by the Ministry of Health to become a flagship hospital representing State-of-the Art cardiovascular services for the nation. Its cardiovascular service is being led by Dr. Lê Ng?c Thành.  His unit at the Viet Duc hospital already has a nationally admired reputation with an established history of success in conducting pediatric and older congenital heart cases.  Many of his staff have joined the new unit, and bring their expertise with them. Collectively, they are seeking CardioStart’s help to develop their program to ensure gold standards are in place and safe passage of their children through the system is ensured.
Deficits in equipment, supplies and education affect their ability to help these children.  With assistance of equipment, education and program development there is hope that more children can be helped in a timely manner.  All CardioStart missions are strongly education focused.
HANOI
(Vietnamese: Hà N?i), the capital of Vietnam, is a fascinating blend of East and West, with Chinese influence from centuries of dominance, and French design from its colonial past. It is largely unspoiled by modern architecture of the 1970s and 80s, and is now going through a modernization that is making it a rising star in Southeast Asia.  Visitors will find several museums of historical significance including the infamous “Hanoi Hilton” which held Senator John McCain during the Vietnam War. Hoan Kiem Lake is a pleasant park in the center of town, within easy walking distance from anywhere in the Old Quarter.  Hanoi is considered a culinary capital of Vietnam with a culinary school and many highly regarded restaurants.  Hanoi residents greeted CardioStart volunteers last year with great warmth and the attitude towards foreigners, including those from the USA is very courteous and hospitable.
